During my foundation year I wandered into a talk of Grayson Perry's without knowing much about him. He totally won me over then and to this day is the only person I really enjoy listening to when it comes to the topic of craft and art. What he says is always fairly straightforward for a transvestite potter whose guru is Alan Measles, his 50 year old teddy bear.

My uncle came over while I was at work and altered my workbench for me! He even set up my fume extraction system and lamp too! Plus, he made a little place for me to put my pliers, files and mandrels. Bless. I opened the workroom door and experienced emotional flashbacks from the christmas when Santa brought me Gogo My Walking Pup. I still have a lot to do and will post more photo's when my torch finally makes it's way to the City of Champs. I swear if it wasn't called the Orca torch I would have said 'forgetaboutit' ages ago. It's been over a month! Can't wait to start making work again.

Yulia is a friend of mine from Edmonton, we didn't meet until we were in College in Halifax, NS when I served her gelato and she sold me her art history course pack. Since then we have gone on a cross country road trip and spent most our NY summer together. She's Edmonton-bound as of an hour ago. I'll miss her but I'm sure we'll meet again soon in the strangest of ways.

Things that didn't make Yulia feel better about her bike-wreck-face-scars:

"At least they're not acne scars!"

She lived in Bed-Stuy, found this knife on the sidewalk, sterilized it, and now she cuts her vegetables with it at picnics!

We had the same high school art teacher and live in adjacent neighborhoods. Our houses have the same layout and her brother is a youtube sensation who films himself dancing in their basement. He is also a nano engineer.

The National Gallery had a Fred Herzog photography exhibition running. He had used Kodachrome film so his snaps from Banff to Vancouver were super colour saturated, it seemed rare to see such vivacious images of Canada's urban spaces from the 50's and 60's. Usually it's just a given that quality street photos from that time are from somewhere in the States. I'm glad they're around but they make me miss my favorite areas of home and deeply regret not getting my act together when it came to developing my Kodachrome film. Happy day after Canada Day! I feel a bit homesick.

There was also a really beautiful installation produced by the Kjartansson brothers from Iceland during their time at the Banff Center for the Arts. I could have stayed in this room all day and my attempt made me late for my own opening reception...

I took the train to Midland Park, New Jersey to visit my friend Kara and her family. Her home looked, felt and smelt like cozy and her family was a super kind and entertaining group of people who unsurprisingly felt very strongly about The Boss.

My good friend Zsuzsa stopped in NYC on her way to Bogota, we rejoiced and then I saw her onto the bus to Newark around 8 am this morning. The bus driver told me that I was never going to see her again because he was stealing her. It was weird and made me worry that someone was actually going to steal her in Colombia. At about 1 I went for lunch around where I work and as I was walking down an unfamiliar avenue I thought of good old Zsuzsi and how she was probably very far away by now. Things got weird when I heard Zsusza's voice say my name, she wasn't far away at all but walking straight towards me unbackpacked and looking very sad. Long story short there was a mix -up that future Zsuzs will look back on and laugh about but for now it's just some tears that turn into giggless and then laughter when on our way home we find an open fire hydrant. It was really strange to find eachother like that in a place as populated as New York and I'm glad that no one stole her.

On the subway to the beach we sat in the middle of two groups of super loud (enthusiastic) adolescent kids, two of which were angry girls starring eachother down and tell eachother to "shut up" with bad words in between. It was great and I was glad to be wearing shades so that I could love every minute of it.
Girls in middle school are meeeean. I'm sure future psychologists will discover that between the ages of 12 and 14 the part of the brain where empathy lives is under construction in girls. Except for those named Erica...

So far this place is pretty amazing. I've been sososooo lucky with the present living situation, I've found a new place for my future living situation and I'm not missing my past living situation one bit. Yulia and I ate yield sign sized slices of artichoke pizza and drank big gulps of beer in a park last night, it couldn't have been a more ideal eating situation.

There are more American flags here than I had ever imagined so I've started photographing the most bazar configurations of the stars and stripes. I'll post a few of them on this "jewellery" blog, but for now here's a classic.
